Android Honeycomb / Motorola Xoom hands-ons:

Fully-functional Xooms with complete (or seemingly complete) builds of Honeycomb are out in force here at Google's event in Mountain View today, and a bunch of partners are hanging out to demonstrate the tablet apps they've been working on. We checked out both Monster Madness -- a game that's been on Xbox 360 and PS3 for some time -- and Grocery IQ, both of which obviously bring very different experiences to the table (unless you consider grocery shopping "a game," which some of us admittedly do).

Though we thought we detected some stuttering and lag from Monster Madness when it was demoed on stage, the experience up close and in person was much smoother -- definitely 100 percent playable. We double-checked and confirmed that the tablet game is a 100 percent content port from the console games, you're not missing anything here. It features three control modes that let you toggle between two on-screen analog sticks, one stick, and a fully accelerometer-based mode that most users probably won't consider practical because you've got to tilt the screen too much. Interestingly, the developer noted that there's a low-res mode that he actually toggled in an area of the game with a lot of water because it tends to slow down, despite the fact that it's running on Unreal Engine and is fully optimized for multiple cores. Could it be that game studios are already pushing the limits of this hardware from day one?

Moving onto Grocery IQ, it's basically a fancy shopping list with coupons -- it's already on both iOS and Android phones, and odds are good you already know what it is. What was really interesting, though, was that we got a full demo of "application fragment" layout switching between landscape and portrait views (the app has a two-pane view for tablets) and the process of adding and removing widgets. As with some of the first-party widgets we've seen, Grocery IQ seems to have done a good job making its widgets visually rich and engaging -- particularly the coupon browser, which appears as a stack of rotating coupons with color graphics. See videos of both products after the break!

If the iPad 2 does not steal Google's idea of implementing segmented frames, it is full of fail.

"Could it be that game studios are already pushing the limits of this hardware from day one?"

Of course, the game was made for console systems with much more powerful cpu's. There is no engine that could push tablets or smartphones beyond the cutting edge of technology available on consoles, pc's, or laptops. Any competent developer should already be able to push the hardware to its limits.

Ok, I'm a tech guy, a developer, a graphic designer, and a geek and this Honeycomb looks like the most damned complex thing you could have on a tablet.
  • I agree with Haze. Sometimes you compromise the very required features for simplicity. This is not what I want. I would like to have more of those features and it doesn't seem that complex to me btw. Though I am not a developer and a graphic designer.
But I would say that it could be done better than this
  • :-/ That kind of leads me to doubt your skills then! Everything I've seen appears to make tablets more accessible and functional.

Beastly. Those WebOs tablets had better be really dope with this guy dominating the set!

folks it looks like Apple wont be alone in selling a Tablet that has a good touchscreen experience. this Andriod
touchscreen technology will only improve and it shows Flash video and that is good because a person will see more of the internets video content than you would see on an Ipad. if this the Xoom can use apps that are in the Android store/sites then wow folks it will definately be worth buying.

Honeycomb, the widget-OS. I don't like widgets. There is no consistency.

    Don't like widgets?
    Don't use them?
    Could it be that easy?
  • spas2k 21 hours ago in reply to Imperial Dynamics
until apple comes out with "magical" widgets....
  • kriskk 1 day ago
With all them widgets, I'm convinced that the Xoom will be a hit only with the nerds.

I don't understand why but apparently it's still laggy,

water effect is laggy the guy even changed graphic quality to continue
3:50 in the last video coupon scrolling is laggy

on the other videos i found on youtube, when dragging around widgets or icons, the stuff doesn't stick close to finger movements. or guess that's more of a screen response time issue?

the only Android device I've played with as snappy as iphone is the Galaxy S. (not sure about Nexus S coz I've only touched it for like 2 mins)
  • Benjamin R Mendez 1 day ago
i dont about laggy but it sure slow when rotating the screen lmao???

I think this cool and all but, tablets are just smartphones with big screens. And who wants to sit on a tablet all day at home when you could be on a home computer? or maybe a notebook/net book w/ keyboards.

As a gaming device, how would this beat out a more game oriented device like the 3DS or the newest PSP? Or simply gaming on a phone.

    Xoom Boom!
  • Think of a tablet as a laptop replacement for those who consume much more than they create [which is most people].
  • Exactly, when you only want to browse the web (like most of us are doing now) or view media, a tablet is actually much more convenient and portable.

I dont like the advertisements on Engadgets video. I wish that they would go away. The advertisement is in the way of what I am looking at. >.<
  • I like $500 price for this sort of gadget.
  • PommeApfel 1 day ago
The guy in the video said he was running the game at FULL HD. Little did he know full HD is not 1280, its 1920x1080. He was running the game at HALF HD! Way to dupe your consumers! Stop lying!
  • He was running the game in "HD". Not "Full HD" as advertisers use it, but 720p is HD nontheless.
Probably just a slip of the tongue.
  • PommeApfel 1 day ago
I must say it looks pretty good, but iOS is still way more mature. I will give this at least another year to mature. If you need a tablet today, get iPad2 when it comes out. Don't waste time on this becuase they will stop supporting it 6 months from now mark my words.

PS: You will have to wait 1 year to get your 3.1 patch haha
  • Funny, I feel exactly the opposite. I was SORELY disappointed with the iPad. It is just like my iPhone... where's the differentiation? I was looking for something more like a more portable laptop than a big phone. This on the other hand is a lot more sophisticated, sexy, and functional. As for apps, I happen to know that there is already an app for everything I used on the iPhone.

Switched to an Evo about 7-8 months ago and can honestly say, it is a WAY cooler user interface. The performance is way better so far too.
  • iPad 2 = 1/2 Xoom
  • PommeApfel 1 day ago in reply to X-Man
You got your math wrong, so far Xoom got 0.00001% of apps so have fun staring at the empty home screen
  • TofuWarrior 1 day ago in reply to PommeApfel
Aren't you forgetting the full array of 300,000+ apps that it can run from the current Android Market?

But if the Android apps for phones are any indication, the tablet-optimized apps will appear quickly and gather numbers quickly as well. It seems developers are very, very interested in developing for Honeycomb.
  • JoaoJoao 1 day ago in reply to TofuWarrior
You mean so this thing is just a big Android phone?
  • TofuWarrior 1 day ago in reply to JoaoJoao
Just like the iPad, this is completely backwards compatible with the existing apps in the Android Market. And like the iPad, developers will create apps optimized for its larger screen and framework features.
  • Netmagix 1 day ago
Wow that is one expensive shopping list. At one point of the video the guy tries to synchronise the purchase of bread and butter in to his Nexus S. Try giving that to nanny

Gahh I want this so badly, such a sexy device. The only problem is the price... 700 dollars is too much for me.

HTC should pull an Eris and release a cheaper tablet with just a smaller screen. I'd get on that so quickly, I love me some honeycomb.

This and the iPad 2 are extremely exciting, I can't wait to see what the iPad 2 brings. I'm loving this dual core processing; the A5 looks sexy, but the Tegra 2 is definitely extremely beastly.

    BRING ME THE TABLETS!
  • The Galaxy Tab 2 will be sweet as well.
  • ILL TROOPER 12 hours ago in reply to X-Man
Are we already looking ahead to that? The Tab just came out!
  • TigerGman 1 day ago
Wow you took all this from a 4 minute video of a shopping app? LOL.

Has anyone here seen Infinity Blade on iOS.. those games are a complete joke! they need to up their game from that lame ass content...
  • Christopher Garner 1 day ago
Pretty amazing. Hats off to Google. Now let's see how third parties can mess this up with UI skins!

WoW is all that I can say about this tablet and the Honeycomb, Bravo Google and Android Bravoooo. Very excited to pick one up money well spent:)

so sick... I'm sure i'm not the only one who could care less about tablets until I saw honeycomb

    I need this thing
  • steven_amani 1 day ago
Not really feeling the UI. That's subjective though.

    this is so kickass!

Looks nice but I wonder if there is any lag like on many Android powered devices?

Here a list of apps (or equivalents) that I would need available in android market for me to buy this:
    Korg iMS-20
    Korg iElectribe
    multitrack DAW
    ThumbJam
    Xenon
    Argon
    NNN Mono
    NanoStudio
    BeatMaker
    SunVox
    NanoLoop
    Hexatone
    Bassline
    Bleep!Box
    Curtis
    NlogSynth
    MiniSynth Pro
    Crystal Synth
    ReBirth

These are a few of the apps that I bought an iPad for. I did not buy an ipad to look at videos on the crapper, or play games, I bought it for audio. Basically none of these apps have any equivalent on the android market. When at least these apps exist on the android market, I will come over to the android cult.
(Edited by author 1 day ago)
  • That's why I'm buying the iPad, too. It's a niche use, but it's important to me, so ... eh.
Android's MIDI implementation is awful. So developers can't make those apps [or if they can, it would take a lot more work, is my understanding]. In either case they aren't. You can get 'Free Piano' or 'Drums HD' but ... yeah, not the same [at ALL] as the iMS-20 or other iOS apps currently out.

    but...but....but... Android is so open!

    Haha. Too funny.
  • that's so funny, its ironic because mostly the former windows mobile and blackberry people are preaching about the openness of android. I only really use linux on my home computers and servers, but when I actually want to write music and do work, I take out my ipad or macbook. I am a major proponent of the open software movement, but there are not many truly open apps for music production (none that are very good anyway). Android seems to be the opposite of open from a consumer standpoint, but hell, I'm open to the idea of using android once the music production apps mature... if that ever happens.

can the psp 2 stand against all the tablet/phone games on multiple platform in spite of its mind blowing hardware?

I mean they are literally dominating nowadays!

  • 30Seconds 1 day ago
These two are very underwhelming apps so far.
